We all know that Retinol is the most preferred and researched molecule in anti-aging skincare, and of course we all want to include it in our skincare so that our skin can stay youthful.
Today we have Dr. Rasya Dixit decoding how to start using retinol, choose the correct retinol for your skin type and how to include it in your skincare.
The first thing is to understand what retinol is and how does it effect your skin. Retinol is nothing but a group of medicines which are Vitamin A derivatives which help in improving the texture of the skin. It helps in exfoliating the skin, removes the blackheads and white heads, helps the skin to appear smoother, it texturizes the skin. It also helps in regeneration of new collagen hence making the skin more youthful and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
In Indian skin type retinol helps in reducing the signs of pigmentation. It is a product that suits all skin types and can be used from 20 years onwards.
Types of retinols available in the market
1. Retinal palmitate
2. Retinol dehyde
3. Retinol
4. Adaptline
5. Pasoroutine
The last 3 are prescription drugs that can given only if recommended by a dermatologist as a prescription drug. The other are commonly used in over-the-counter products as anti-ageing creams.
The difference between them: Retinol, Adaptline and Pasoroutine are mostly used for Acne and other skin disorders. Usually, they can be given as a spot application as they dry out the skin significantly. They other are most commonly available in most antiaging creams.
How to use retinol
Remember retinol always needs to be used at night, it is usually present in the antiaging night creams. If you are trying it for the first time, it is advisable to use a retinol palmitate or retinol dehyde based cream. This you can start using maybe twice a week on then jawline and make sure that there is no irritation with this product and then start the application all over the face. The product should be used in minimum quantity, just a pea size application is sufficient. Using a moisturizer and gentle cleanser is very important because retinol is going to cause exfoliation of the skin causing the skin to become drier. Remember to use sunscreen as the skin becomes more sensation after use of retinol. Retinol should not be used by pregnant or lactating women.

Retinol can cause a small increase in acne for 2-3 weeks and then your skin will get used to it. It can also cause dryness especially around the mouth and eyes. It can make your skin flaky. You can increase the use of moisturizer while using retinol.
