Summer is a season where the skin is exposed to harsh conditions such as the increased UV radiation and dry air. These factors cause damage to the skin by causing dehydration and irritation which predisposes the skin to dryness. So it becomes very important to take special care of the skin for these months. In addition to your routine skin care, here are some tips to keep your skin glowing through this season.
MOISTURISE
The sun soaks up all the moisture from the skin. So it becomes your job to stop further water loss by using a gentle soap free cleanser to clean the skin. Avoid face washes with strong perfumes as they may cause pigmentation. Make sure to use the face wash two to three times a day. Excessive use of face wash also can cause the skin to dry up. Don’t forget to hydrate with a moisturizer before putting on your sunscreen. You can use hyaluronic acid based gel or lotions, as in the summer, cream based moisturisers may feel heavy on the skin. Invest in some Spa water sprays or mists to help retain and refresh skin water.
SUNSCREEN
Choose a broad spectrum sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 50 which protects against UVA, UVB and UVC, which is reapplied every 2-3 hours. It is essential to use broad brimmed hats, sunglasses, umbrellas and clothing which covers the exposed parts of your body. Avoid exposure to the sun during peak hours of 11 am to 2pm.
VITAMIN C
We recommend the use of vitamin C during summer both in the form of cream and tablets as it protects against the harmful effects of the sun. Vitamin C is an antioxidant which means it helps in skin brightening, skin lightening and tightening instantly. Vitamin C serum can be applied in the morning 5 min before applying the sunscreen, it can be reapplied at nights to give an additional boost and to even out your complexion.
REMOVE MAKE UP
The skin care regimen at night should include a make-up remover to declog your pores, followed by a cleanser and a toner. If you have sensitive skin, make sure that you double check with your dermatologist whether toners would suit your skin. After cleansing, do apply skin soothing creams such as moisturizer which contains hyaluronic acid. If you are above 30 years of age, you can use products containing vitamin A at night but in moderation restricting it to 3-4 times a week. These creams help to prevent fine lines from developing around the eyes and mouth.
HYDRATE AND DETOX
Drink plenty of water 3-5 litres to remain hydrated during summer. Eat fruits and vegetables rich in beta carotene, lycopene and vitamin c such as carrots, tomatoes, beetroots, spinach, oranges, kiwi, papaya.
DOS AND DONTS
Use of scrubs and exfoliants are discouraged in summer as they tend to irritate the skin. In countries which use Bleach products for hair or skin lightening, these products have to be used with caution in summer as they can cause rebound pigmentation on application and sun exposure. After undergoing procedures such as laser and chemical peels it is mandatory to apply good and adequate amount of sunscreen during summer. Be sun safe! Be skin safe!
