Recognized by ancient Egyptians as the “plant of immortality”, Aloe Vera is a succulent that belongs to the Lily family. There are more than 240 known species of the plant, but only a handful of them are rich with medicinal properties – the most potent of them all being Aloe Barbendensis.
In Sanskrit, Aloe Vera is called Ghrita Kumara, and is used in Ayurveda to heal a variety of ailments from minor burns to digestive problems. It has been identified as an effective remedy for baldness, thinning hair, dandruff, scalp irritation and eczema. Its powerful antioxidants revitalize hair follicles, promoting hair growth.
Here are two simple DIY Aloe Vera hair remedies for you to try at home:
1. Squeaky Clean Hair Mask
Fresh aloe gel has astringent properties, making it a great hair and scalp cleaning agent. It helps remove residue build up and accelerates hair growth. Raw aloe vera gel is great as a hair mask on its own, but you can add a few spoons of olive oil if you have dry hair. Additionally, you can also add some honey to give your hair that extra sheen.
2. Defrizz Hair Spritz
Aloe Vera is a near-6 pH, making it a great conditioner for frizzy hair. For this simple leave-in hair spritz you’ll need a quarter cup of aloe vera juice, equal portion of distilled water, 1 teaspoon of aragan oil, or any other light oil like almond, grapeseed or jojoba. Just pour all the ingredients into a spray bottle, preferably made of glass. Shake well, and spray along the length of dry or damp hair, avoiding the roots and scalp.
